Structural Testing
Pavement structural testing is required to ascertain pavement strength and therefore performance. When a heavy vehicle drives over a pavement it causes the pavement to momentarily bend. This applies stresses and strains within the pavement structure leading to surface fatigue and / or subgrade deformation.
A Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) simulates this by non-destructively dropping a known load to pavement surface.

Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD)
We own and operate a JILS Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) which has a standard 300mm diameter load plate able to apply a load up to 120kN. The unit has nine geophone sensors which measure the pavement defection at a specific spacing interval from the load cell.
The raw FWD data can be provided or used to determine:
- Deflection and curvature results to target geotechnical testing
- Structural Number (SNP)
- Layer moduli results based on pavement layer information.
- Sub-grade CBR
- Remaining life and pavement designs based on traffic count data.
